It seems that the words of Jesus to his followers were not a suggestion to be “salt and light” to the world. Nor was it a hopeful intention to become “salt and light.” It wasn’t an aspiration, like if you work hard enough, you will eventually be “salt and light.” Jesus simply said “You ARE the salt of the earth. You ARE the light of the world.” What does it mean for us to already be salt and light in the world?
