May 8: “The Compassionate Healer” (Luke 13:10-17)

As Jesus was teaching on a Sabbath, he notices a crippled woman. He has compassion for her and heals her, setting her free from her bondage to infirmity. The synagogue ruler accuses Jesus of breaking the law, but Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of the synagogue ruler, defends himself and the woman, calling her “a daughter of Abraham.” Jesus’ healing was not only physical but also social, restoring the woman’s place in her community. Today, let us ask Jesus to lay his healing hand on us and set us free from things that bind us.
