April 15 / Good Friday: “Father, Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit” (Luke 23:44-49)

Tonight’s text reveals the meaning of Jesus’ death and peoples’ response to his death. The cross showed that Jesus indeed was the righteous one who received God’s wrath in place of sinners. His sacrifice allowed everyone with faith to have access to the Father. His last words revealed his complete trust in the Father. Like the Centurion we are to acknowledge who Jesus is. Like the crowd, we are to beat our chests in contrition. Like his disciples, we are to become witnesses of his death as well as his resurrection. And like Jesus, we too can call God our Father and trust him with all our being.
