July 16: “American Idols: Power” (Philippians 2:5-11)

We want power to exalt ourselves and to be in control of our own lives. We think that we can be fulfilled if we have the power to get whatever we want. But power is not ours. Power is given by God not to exalt ourselves but to exalt God. Not to serve ourselves but to serve others. What can help us overcome the idol of power? It is the sacrifice and the example of Jesus. The sin of power-craving is forgiven and healed by God’s love. And Jesus’ example tells us that the way to true glory & power is not self-aggrandizement but self-giving. He lost his life for us and found it. Jesus tells us to do the same.
