How would you define what a church is? How is a church different from other social organizations? Hauerwas and Willimon define the church as a kingdom colony, and Christians as resident aliens. A church is a microcosm, an outpost, a foretaste of God’s kingdom, a piece of heaven on earth, a new world in the midst of an old one. We embody and live out God’s rule on earth. We are resident aliens who live according to kingdom values taught in the Sermon on the Mount.
