When we think of the Sermon on the Mount, we think of seemingly impossible commands, like loving our enemies. But we must remember that Jesus’ sermon begins with blessings for the church. The heavy burden of Jesus’ commands are made lighter by these blessings. In kingdom ethics, commands are always preceded by grace for empowerment. Those who receive and respond to God’s grace are the salt and light of the earth.
