Jesus calls us friends, literally “the loved ones,” in Greek. We are “the beloved” because Jesus, as our true friend, laid down his life for us. Our friendship with Jesus leads to our friendship with the Father and with God’s people. We are to love one another as Jesus loved us. A sacrificial friendship is the mark of Christ’s church. What would prevent such a radical friendship, and what would encourage it?
