By quoting Psalm 22, Jesus is inviting us to understand his death. While Jesus was hung on the cross, darkness fell upon the whole land at noon, for three hours. Darkness signified God’s judgment. Jesus felt forsaken because God’s wrath against humanity was poured out on him. Because God’s wrath was spent on Jesus, God’s justice was satisfied and we can be forgiven. By dying in our place, he has become our Savior. In his darkest hour, Jesus confessed that God is on the throne and put his trust in the Father. In our darkest hour, we can confess that God is on the throne and place our confidence in God.
