The first priority for Jesus is for God’s Name to be made holy. Since we bear God’s Name as His people, we can either sanctify or profane God’s Name by the way we live. To pray “hallowed be your name” is to ask God to make us holy as God is holy. But ultimately it is God who makes His Name holy. God does so through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ who will draw all nations and renew the whole creation. We are made for God’s praise. To live this prayer is to fulfill the purpose for which we are made. Are we living to promote ourselves or to promote God’s glory?
