August 17: “Your Kingdom Come!” (Matthew 6:9-10)

As followers of Jesus, we are to pray for the coming of God’s kingdom on earth. The word “your” reminds us that what we pray for is not MY kingdom. It is about seeing everything as God’s, not mine. “Kingdom” is not a place but more of God’s activity, God’s rule. God’s rule is realized where his children obey God’s will. How does God’s rule “come”? God is the one who brings his rule, but we also have a part. God’s kingdom comes as His people love each other, proclaim the gospel, and work for justice and mercy. What we do may be small, but as in the feeding of the five thousand, God can multiply our small sacrifices to bless multitudes.
