April 16: “What’s a Sacrament?” (Luke 22:14-20, Matthew 28:18-20)

The Evangelical Protestant Church puts much emphasis on the Word but not enough on the Sacraments. But the Sacraments are visible and tangible Word. Christ gave them to us as gifts to nourish our spiritual life and faith. Unlike the Catholic Church, we keep only two sacraments: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. What are the sacraments? First, they are a pledge of allegiance. Second, the sacraments are visible signs of God’s invisible grace; they are signs that point to a reality, and that reality is Jesus Christ. Third, the sacraments are seals of God’s promises. Fourth, the sacraments are means of God’s grace that convey to us all the benefits in Christ. The sacraments are effective only when received in faith. Do you long to receive God’s grace? Receive the sacraments in faith!
