April 23: “Why Baptism? Why Water?” (1 Peter 3:18-21)

First question: If you are justified by faith, why do you need to be baptized? Baptism is an outward expression of faith. Baptism is also an indispensable part of Christian life (Rom 6:3-4), Christian identity (Gal 3:26-28), and Christian mission (Matt 28:19). Second question: Why is water used in baptism? In his discussion of baptism, Peter refers to the flood in the time of Noah. Noah’s family was saved out of the judgment of water. Baptism symbolizes salvation out of judgment, new life through death. Baptism is a gospel promise in physical form. Have you been baptized?
