August 6: “American Idols: Christian Nationalism” (Daniel 2:31-45)

People confuse evangelical Christianity with Christian nationalism. Christian nationalism is a cultural framework that advocates for a fusion of Christianity with American civic life. It co-opts Christian language in order to cloak a particular political end. It does not seek God’s kingdom, but the kingdom of “true” Americans who endorse nativism, white supremacy, and divine sanction for authoritarian control. But Christians’ ultimate allegiance is to God’s kingdom, not any kingdom on earth. Rather than seeking our own political or social privileges, we are to seek & obey God’s rule first.
