October 1: “The Day of Atonement” (Leviticus 16:1-10, 29-31)

Yom Kippur (the day of atonement) is the holiest day in Israel’s calendar. Its main purpose was to cleanse the tabernacle and God’s people from the pollution of sin. Only on this day, the High Priest was allowed to enter into the Holy of Holies with the blood of a sacrifice. However, neither the high priest nor the sacrifice was perfect. The atonement was good only for a year. Everything missing in Yom Kippur points to a fulfillment in the future. What’s lacking in Yom Kippur is fulfilled in Jesus the Messiah.
